In accordance with  the Law of Ukraine “On fire safety " there is a service of fire safety in NNEGC “Energoatom”, which collaborates with detachments of state fire guard, constantly guards Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs), and realizes a state fire supervision.

Guaranteeing of fire safety under international IAEA requirement is a part of general task of ensuring nuclear safety of NPPs since fire may be one of the causes of nuclear events. On the other hand, the nuclear incidents can be accompanied with considerable fire. Therefore ensuring fire safety of NNPs is one of the priority tasks of NNEGC “Energoatom”.

The fire-technical commissions of NPPs together with voluntarily fire crews realize public control over the observance of instructions and requirements on fire safety by the personnel and permanently work over the improvement of the safety culture. Operating personnel of the shifts together with the fire guards systematically conduct studies and training on liquidation of fires and ignitions with the departure to the place of the conditional fires. Voluntary fire crews annually lead competitions at all the NPPs.  All detachments of state fire guard are provided with the contemporary fire-technical equipment and means of individual protection and communication.

In accordance with Ukrainian Regulations on fire safety, the latter is ensured by conducting organizational, technical and other activities directed to fire prevention and ensuring people safety, reduction of possible material damage and negative ecological consequences in case of fire, creation of conditions for rapid call of fire subdivisions and successful fire extinguishing.  All of these requirements of Regulations are followed at Ukrainian NPPs.

In order to maintain the fire safety of Ukrainian power units, in accordance with requirements of acting norms and regulations, “State complex program aimed at improving fire safety of cable facilities of Ukrainian NPPs" and branch “Program of first and foremost measures on improving fire safety of Ukrainian NPPs before the year 2002 including" are carried out in NNEGC ”Energoatom”, considerable funds are spent on fire protection at NPPs.

In 2002 year by the state of 25.11.02 no fires or ignition are registered at Ukrainian NPPs.

A state of fire protection in the State enterprise NNEGC “Energoatom”  as of September 2005

 In September and for 9 months of 2005 fires are not registered in the State enterprise NNEGC “Energoatom”. For 9 months of the previous year one fire was registered: 04.01.2004 in the separated subdivision Rivne NPP in outdoor switchgear a fire happened caused by three-phase fault in the regulator of on-load station service transformer of block №1. Fire results: damaged transformer ТРДНС-25000/35 and 30 running meters of wireways.

In October and for a 10-month period of 2005 fires are not registered in the State enterprise NNEGC “Energoatom”.
